Residents at Downshaw Lodge Care Home in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, spent Easter getting ready for the arrival of some real-life bunnies!
Large, outdoor cages have been delivered to the home to accommodate four rabbits from a local animal rescue centre.
Residents thoroughly enjoy their animal therapy sessions once a fortnight, when a handler brings in snakes, rats and other creatures, so we asked them whether they would like to have their own animals to care for every day.
Together we decided that rabbits would be a good choice of animal as they are comforting to handle – and we have a good-sized garden for them to enjoy in fine weather.
Staff will visit the rescue centre and meet the rabbits, then show photos and videos to the residents to help choose which ones should be our new pets. Then there will be a competition to choose the best names for them.
We hope the residents will enjoy the responsibility of working with staff to feed and care for their new furry friends.
