Qualia staff saddle-up for Dementia Awareness Week

Staff at Qualia Care are getting on their bikes to highlight Dementia Awareness Week (May 14-20) and raise money for good causes.

Budding Bradley Wiggins’ and Laura Kennys across Qualia’s care homes and at the HQ in Sowerby Bridge have jumped on exercise bikes for a sponsored Charity Bike-a-thon.

Those participating have been sponsored for munching as many miles as possible. At the end of the week the combined distance covered will be revealed.

All money raised from the event will go to great local causes nominated by each care home.

Staff at St Mary’s Nursing Home in Moston, Manchester are raising money for Dr. Kershaw’s Hospice; Washington Lodge Nursing Home in the North East is raising funds for Action on Dementia Sunderland; Duchess Gardens Care Centre in Bingley, West Yorkshire is fundraising for Dementia Friendly Keighley; and Gilwood Lodge Nursing Home in Blackpool is raising money for Freshers Young Dementia Café in St Annes-on-Sea.

Meanwhile staff at Qualia HQ have chosen the Alzheimer’s Society as their charity.

Qualia Care Managing Director, Phil Whitaker, says: “The Charity Bike-a-thon is a great way of supporting Dementia Awareness Week and raising money for charities that are doing valuable work in their local communities.

“Our staff have embraced the event with real enthusiasm, and we’d like to thank everyone who has taken part and donated so generously.”

Alzheimer’s Society is asking people across the UK to unite against dementia by supporting Dementia Awareness Week.

The annual event aims to raise awareness and understanding of dementia, which is set to be one of the 21st century’s biggest killers.

Alzheimer’s Society says recognition and knowledge about dementia remains low, with many families having to face its consequences alone.

The charity says: “We want everyone to come together and take action. By uniting, we can raise awareness, offer help and understanding, improve care and urgently find a cure.”
