Residents’ stories in the spotlight.
Sandycroft Nursing Home in Blackpool’s South Shore area has been sharing residents’ life stories as part of its regular newsletter.
In November, the focus was on Edna, a great-grandmother who served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service at the age of 19. She told of her daily routine of a cold wash followed by stodgy porridge and weak tea for breakfast, the woollen blankets in her unheated dormitory, the horror of bombs and the joy of her father – a World War One veteran – when she was finally demobbed and arrived home safely.
Good news stories such as the granting of a resident’s request to move to a larger room where he could use his DVD player and X-Box, and residents’ wedding anniversaries, are also featuring in the newsletter.
Recent activities have included a pyjama day for Children In Need raising £35 and a trip to nearby Trinity Church to see the pantomime Snow White, which included much foot-tapping and singing from both staff and residents.
December’s calendar has involved daily activities ranging from quizzes,
Christmas card making, visits from hairdressers and sensory afternoons to movie get-togethers with popcorn all round.
